GAR Awards goes virtual
In response to the coronavirus pandemic, the annual GAR Awards ceremony will be held online for the first time – featuring virtual networking, speeches from our winners and the unveiling of the GAR 30. The 10th annual GAR Awards, which will kick off at 17:30 UK time, will be held on the online videoconferencing platform Zoom as part of the adapted virtual Paris Arbitration Week.

Hong Kong-Secretary for Justice signs MoU with Chairman of eBRAM
The Secretary for Justice, Ms Teresa Cheng, SC, signed a Memorandum of Understanding today (May 18) with the Chairman of eBRAM International Online Dispute Resolution Centre, Mr Nicholas Chan, on the COVID-19 Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) Scheme. The Scheme will engage eBRAM to provide ODR services to the general public and businesses, in particular micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, involved in low value disputes arising from or relating to COVID-19.

Virtual Arbitration in India: A Practical Guide
Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai’s Centre for Arbitration and Research (CAR) is pleased to announce the publication of “Virtual Arbitration in India: A Practical Guide”. As the COVID-19 pandemic compels all dispute resolution mechanisms to be held virtually, this guide comes as timely research to familiarise the arbitration community. The guide is aimed to enable parties, counsel and arbitrators to make an informed decision on the use of virtual procedures in arbitration. It therefore analyses the technology that is available, and the practical considerations that must be made in determining the technology to be used. It further provides guidance on the conduct of such proceedings with detailed analysis on protocols and guidelines, drawing from emerging global practices in virtual arbitration. Arbitrators may find much assistance for case management in virtual arbitrations from this guide. As arbitrators and counsel start participation in virtual arbitrations, variety of troubling legal issues may arise, specifically in the context of due process rights of the parties. The guide provides, with reference to Indian law, a multi-faceted analysis on the potential issues that may arise in what is likely to be a popular mode of dispute resolution in the coming times. The guide has been researched and written by Aditya Gupta and Natasha Kavalakkat, Research Associates with CAR under the guidance of research advisor, Chirag Balyan, Faculty Coordinator at the Centre. The guide has been reviewed and refined with insights from leading arbitration practitioners from India, and abroad.
